Your installation keeps running
With or without a renewal. The last version you were entitled to keeps working for good; you simply stop receiving new ones. An expired update period switches nothing off.
What renewing gives you
Twelve more months in which you may install every new version. Counted from your current end date if it is still running, otherwise from today.

Then it is missing the new licence. The update period is part of the signed licence, and a signature cannot be changed after the fact. Download the licence again in your account and load it.
